The racial makeup of the county was 91.1% White, 0.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. 5.8% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 3,426 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were married couples living together, 21.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% were non-families. 41.4% of all households included someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.92.
