As of the census of 2020, there were 8,369 people, 3,387 households, and 2,330 families residing in the county. There were 4,028 housing units. The racial makeup of the county was 91.1% White, 0.3% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. 5.8% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 3,426 households out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were married couples living together, 21.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% were non-families. 41.4% of all households included someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.92.

25.4% of the population is 19 years and younger, 5.4% from 20 to 24, 21.7% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42.9 years.

The median income for a household in the county was $59,232, and the median income for a family was $49,214. About 8.3% of the population lives in poverty.
